Southern Turkish Bites

Here's a smattering of some other typical "Turkish Bites"

Sunflower Seeds
These are THE snack of Turkey! These beauties grow in the flat plains in the center of the country and are planted in various home gardens. The seeds are completely white and more narrow, with a thinner shell/skin than what we are used eating at baseball games! They take the seeds, dry and salt them and enjoy! It's not often you will hear a Turkish person indicate they want a snack other than sunflower seeds!

Donner
Meat on a stick is popular in Turkey and they do it well. The donner wrap was a basis of my diet while in Turkey. Beef and chicken are typically the options and beef is usually better. Here I am in Pamukkale, enjoying a beef wrap in a tree house table at an outdoor restaurant.

Gozleme
The Turkish "pancake". It's also like a crepe. I only saw them filled with savory items but I suppose they could also have sweet things. Most common is a cheese, onion, potato combo or with the addition of spinach too. But really you can get anything in these puppies!

Turkish Breakfast!
This was the breakfast that I received while staying at a budget hotel in Pamukkale! Hot eggs, meat, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, olives, butter, yogurt, jams, watermelon and bread. And this was the breakfast that was included in the room rate of maybe $10USD.

CHEESE
Turkey has some nice cheeses for sure. This one was particularly lovely and pungent- as it is aged INSIDE an animal!! Not sure exactly what it is, but I'm thinking goat. WOW! Check out the hair!!

Dried red bell peppers, eggplant and mushrooms hanging.

A mini-Spice Market in Fethiye. Love the presentation too.

Fruit!
These melons were my savior on the hot summer days. Turkish watermelon is not to be missed!!

PIDE
The "Turkish Pizza". It looks like a long boat, filled in the center with a variety of toppings (just like in the US- cheese, sausage, vegetables, etc.) with the edges folded inward and made into an oblong shape with pointed ends as shown here. The dough is thin and after all toppings are placed, it is baked in a wood fire oven.

Fish!
Along the costal areas, fresh fish is readily available & cheap! This beautiful fish was only $0.75 USD!

Another watermelon (karpuz) stand. This was my favorite sight in Turkey!
